The 2012 Main Stage Season

The upcoming season will include a Commedia Dell’arte modern comedy, a Molière-esque French musical farce, an avant-garde black comedy exploring the darker nature of the human psyche, and a Jewish Victorian comedy. We are looking for talented and disciplined performers.  All roles require physical dexterity.  All Main Stage Evening Shows are 99 Seat AEA. Union & Non-Union submissions accepted. (Note: Family Theatre shows are non-union; only non-union submissions will be accepted for Family Theatre productions.)

Main Stage Actors’ Repertory Theatre Evening Production

“Arnold Schulman’s Sleeping Ugly”

((To Play Mid March through beginning of June: Saturday & Sunday evenings. 99 Seat AEA agreement – Union & Non-Union submissions accepted. Some pay.)

Judy (female; lead; 25-35; Caucasian/Jewish) Judy's looks are a triumph of the modern cosmetic and fashion industry: a mousey, klutzy girl that can transform herself into a beautiful ultra-chic “New York” lady.  She feels so alone in her single life, so sure she'll never meet the right man, she's ready to give up in a big way.  Must have great comic feel and timing (physically and with text), and be able to transform from “ugly duckling” to glam goddess.

Stanley (male; lead; 25 – 35 (to look early 30's); Caucasian/Jewish) Stanley is compulsively neat to the point of being almost antiseptic, obsessively grammatically “correct,” and utterly lonely.  Not a stereotypical manly “hero,” he's a pediatric dentist who believes that every full moon he transforms into a werewolf. Must have great comic feel and timing (physically and with text) and be comfortable with broad (but organic) physical humor.

Kabuki Commedia Ensemble:  Seeking three women and three men (30-50) to play all the various people, locations and objects that make up Judy and Stanley's world.  Will play several small speaking roles (i.e. Doorman, streetwalker, thief, secretary, waiter, etc.), but will carry the show physically, creating the environments and mood for every scene. Must have excellent physical control and stamina, and be facile at handling props and costume pieces. Comic timing is a big plus, as well as feeling comfortable at playing broad characters.

Family Theatre Musical Matinee Series

“The Adventures of Little Red (Riding Hood, of course)”

(To Play February through mid-May; Saturday & Sunday afternoons. Non-union. Some pay. This show is Family Friendly.)

Casting:

Two to three women to play Little Red's best friends (German peasant girls) as well as Grandmama’s best friends (German Grandmamas). Singing and dancing is required, accents a plus.  These women need to carry the show with their energy!

Schools' Theatre Field Trip Performances

We are looking for performers for our Schools’ Theatre Field Trip program.

Must be able to sing; experience in Musical Theatre is a definite plus.

Must be able to move well.

Must enjoy and be proficient at playing broad stroke, yet organic, characters – i.e. a silly stepsister, Tweedle Dee or Tweedle Dum, a rag doll, one of Snowhite’s Companions, a charming Prince, the Beast, a tap-dancing Piggy, Snowhite, a French wolf, and so forth.

Must have a flexible schedule (Schools’ Theatre Field Trips are weekday mornings).

Must enjoy working in ensemble.

Most importantly, must consider Family Theatre as equal in importance to “regular” theatre. Many Playhouse Family Theatre productions have gone on to become Main Stage and International Touring shows – the Playhouse approaches each of its original productions with the same attitude, work ethic, rehearsal schedule, commitment, and budget, whether the show is geared for “Kids between the ages of 2 and 102” or “Adults Only.”

Some pay. Non-Union. Weekday morning performances.

Play Submissions

Thank you for your interest concerning play submissions here at Santa Monica Playhouse. A few things to consider:

1. We accept submissions for full-length plays with 10 or fewer actors only (no one-acts, please).
2. We received hundreds of plays each year, so it will take six months to a year before your play will even be read.
3. We usually plan our performance schedule at least two years in advance
4. We do not accept musicals, family theatre or children's shows.
5. NO materials will be returned.

If this does not frighten you away, please send us your resume, a brief (no more than one page) summary or synopsis of the play, and no more than ten sample pages. If there is interest in reading the entire play, we will inform you within a year of your submission. If there is no interest, you will not hear from us. Do not send the full-length play. Do NOT send a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope.
