Two-time Oscar nominated
screenwriter/playwright brings a
World Première to Santa Monica Playhouse

A
Very Adult Fairytale
|
|
Santa
Monica, CA March 19, 2012 - Santa Monica Playhouse is proud
to announce the world premiere of "ARNOLD
SCHULMAN'S SLEEPING UGLY," two-time
Oscar nominated show business legend Arnold Schulman's
delightfully humorous, intensely romantic adult fairytale
about love and lust, longing and belonging, sex and
sensibility, parents and pediatrics, and the passion and
pain of living with a werewolf, opening Sunday, April 15 and
playing weekends through June 17, 2012.
Take
Judy, a beautiful, ultra-chic New York magazine editor with
a deadly and deathly propensity for klutziness, add Stanley,
a successful but lonely pediatric dentist whose inability to
form a serious relationship stems from a case of
Lycanthropia (he shape-shifts), mix firmly with the
pressures and expectations of the competitive world in which
we live juxtaposed with the desperate yearning for true
intimacy, and you have "ARNOLD
SCHULMAN'S SLEEPING UGLY," a
marvelously funny, touchingly ironic surreal adult cartoon
come to larger-than-life in a joyous theatrical explosion on
the intimate Santa Monica Playhouse stage.
Internationally acclaimed director Chris DeCarlo takes
audiences on a wild ride, combining the Playhouse's
signature Commedia-Circus style with mock Japanese Kabuki,
physical theatrix, multi-media design and live underscore,
ably abetted by Commedia Movement Director Serena Dolinsky.
The company of 8 actors portrays over 100 separate
characters and physically creates a panoply of spaces and
places, including an elegant Fifth Avenue Penthouse
apartment, a moonlit forest in the Caribbean, a midnight
movie theatre, the Bowery, and the East River, ably
supported by graphic artist Timothy Chadwick's delightful
illustrations and projections and award-winning costume
designer Ashley Hayes's droll and quirky costumes. The live
percussion, provided by Linn Yamaha Hirschman, speaks as
another 'character' in the comedy.
"What
does it mean to be a 'man' in today's universe," asks
playwright Schulman. "Or a 'woman.' How can we find a
partner when we are prevented from even finding ourselves within
the confining, stereotypical boundaries placed on us by the
media, our families, friends and colleagues, and our own
need to fit the mold. The limiting and contradictory
definitions of 'male' and 'female' are almost impossible to
live up to, the balancing act almost impossible to control.
Heathcliff's animal magnetism was at once admired and
despised. Mr. D'Arcy's constrained passion was respected and
reviled. What is beauty? What is attractiveness? And what
happens to every ugly duckling who doesn't precisely suit
the current definition?"
For
anyone who has ever looked in the mirror and felt less than
perfect, anyone who has ever lain awake at night, stared at
that second pillow and wondered, "Will there ever be anyone
lying there beside me?" (or wished the person lying beside
them wasn't), for anyone who has ever dreamed of finding the
perfect partner, "ARNOLD
SCHULMAN'S SLEEPING UGLY" will
corroborate, with tongue firmly in cheek, your worst
nightmares, and then lift up your spirits with the
life-affirming discovery that there really is a Jack for
every Jill, and your wildest dreams really can come true.
