Two-time Oscar nominated screenwriter/playwright brings a

World Première to Santa Monica Playhouse

50th year

 A Very Adult Fairytale

Santa Monica, CA March 19, 2012 - Santa Monica Playhouse is proud to announce the world premiere of "ARNOLD SCHULMAN'S SLEEPING UGLY," two-time Oscar nominated show business legend Arnold Schulman's delightfully humorous, intensely romantic adult fairytale about love and lust, longing and belonging, sex and sensibility, parents and pediatrics, and the passion and pain of living with a werewolf, opening Sunday, April 15 and playing weekends through June 17, 2012.

Take Judy, a beautiful, ultra-chic New York magazine editor with a deadly and deathly propensity for klutziness, add Stanley, a successful but lonely pediatric dentist whose inability to form a serious relationship stems from a case of Lycanthropia (he shape-shifts), mix firmly with the pressures and expectations of the competitive world in which we live juxtaposed with the desperate yearning for true intimacy, and you have "ARNOLD SCHULMAN'S SLEEPING UGLY," a marvelously funny, touchingly ironic surreal adult cartoon come to larger-than-life in a joyous theatrical explosion on the intimate Santa Monica Playhouse stage.

Internationally acclaimed director Chris DeCarlo takes audiences on a wild ride, combining the Playhouse's signature Commedia-Circus style with mock Japanese Kabuki, physical theatrix, multi-media design and live underscore, ably abetted by Commedia Movement Director Serena Dolinsky. The company of 8 actors portrays over 100 separate characters and physically creates a panoply of spaces and places, including an elegant Fifth Avenue Penthouse apartment, a moonlit forest in the Caribbean, a midnight movie theatre, the Bowery, and the East River, ably supported by graphic artist Timothy Chadwick's delightful illustrations and projections and award-winning costume designer Ashley Hayes's droll and quirky costumes. The live percussion, provided by Linn Yamaha Hirschman, speaks as another 'character' in the comedy.

"What does it mean to be a 'man' in today's universe," asks playwright Schulman. "Or a 'woman.' How can we find a partner when we are prevented from even finding ourselves within the confining, stereotypical boundaries placed on us by the media, our families, friends and colleagues, and our own need to fit the mold. The limiting and contradictory definitions of 'male' and 'female' are almost impossible to live up to, the balancing act almost impossible to control. Heathcliff's animal magnetism was at once admired and despised. Mr. D'Arcy's constrained passion was respected and reviled. What is beauty? What is attractiveness? And what happens to every ugly duckling who doesn't precisely suit the current definition?"

For anyone who has ever looked in the mirror and felt less than perfect, anyone who has ever lain awake at night, stared at that second pillow and wondered, "Will there ever be anyone lying there beside me?" (or wished the person lying beside them wasn't), for anyone who has ever dreamed of finding the perfect partner, "ARNOLD SCHULMAN'S SLEEPING UGLY" will corroborate, with tongue firmly in cheek, your worst nightmares, and then lift up your spirits with the life-affirming discovery that there really is a Jack for every Jill, and your wildest dreams really can come true.

TWICE GRANTED!

Santa Monica Playhouse is awarded two grants from the

City of Santa Monica and the Santa Monica Arts Commission

Santa Monica, CA · July 5, 2011 - Santa Monica Playhouse Education Coordinator Serena Dolinsky announced today that the Playhouse has been awarded two grants from the City of Santa Monica Community Access and Participation (CAP) Grant Program and the Santa Monica Arts Commission, one to underwrite the "All Join In" Festival with free workshops and performances for the community July 8 - July 17, 2011; the other to support ten school theatre field trips for SMMUSD third-graders during the upcoming academic year. The Playhouse is grateful to the City of Santa Monica for its forward-thinking support of the arts and arts programming and for making these opportunities available.

FREE THEATRE EVENTS FOR THE COMMUNITY

The "All Join In" Festival  - centered around the world premiere production of the original Family Theatre Musical "All Join In - a Fairytale Sing-a-Long Afternoon" - offers free performances and workshops to bring members of many generations together in the life-affirming, community-building magic of a live theatre experience.

PERFORMANCES.  FREE performances of All Join In will be presented Friday and Saturday at 6:30 PM, July 8 and 9, and Saturdays and Sundays at 12:30 and 3:00 pm, July 9-10 and July 16-17. Tickets to all performances are FREE and reservations are required. All Join In, commissioned in 2010 for the Playhouse's 50th anniversary year and the 40th Anniversary of the Playhouse Family Theatre Series, draws upon audience favorite songs and stories from the Playhouse's catalogue of over three dozen Family and International Youth Theatre productions, produced and performed on three continents, to create a sing-the-songs, dance-the-dances, get-on-the-stage, win-the-prizes, good-old-fashioned English Music Hall musical revue for kids 2 to 102!

("You won't find more professional theatre-for children or adults-anywhere in the Los Angeles area then at the Santa Monica Playhouse." Terry Fisher, L.A. Parent)

WORKSHOPS.  FREE public workshops for all ages focusing on song, language arts and movement allowing participants to explore personal objectives and gain a better understanding of peers, seniors and "juniors," as they play in a working theatre with professional artists and are introduced to the creative process, discovering new ways to interact , will be presented Wednesday, July 6 from 6:00 to 7:30 (for ages 6 to adult); Thursday, July 7 and Monday, July 11 from 3:30 to 5:00 (for ages 6 to 15) and Tuesday, July 12 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM (for ages 18 and up). All workshops take place at Santa Monica Playhouse and advance reservations are required.

SCHOOL THEATRE FIELD TRIPS

The Playhouse's acclaimed Diversity-in-Education Program has been awarded a grant that will support a dynamic series of theatre field trips in which 1,000 third grade students in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) will come to the theatre and participate in interactive professional musical productions, pre-show theatre arts preparation, post-show talk-backs and language arts workshops, and hands-on behind-the-scenes lighting, costuming and make-up experiences. The City of Santa Monica Park/Youth Programs calls it "the most fantastic field trip of the year", a program that excites the imagination, offers practical study skills, and augments the VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts) Standards and State Standards in English, Theatre and Reading.
