With generous support from the We Are Santa Monica Fund, the City of Santa Monica, the Santa Monica Arts Commission, and Playhouse PALS, Santa Monica Playhouse is excited to present Vasthy and Friends for the 2025 Black History [every] Month project, a year-long celebration of works that highlight the rich heritage of Black arts, artists and culture.
"Sesame Street" meets Broadway...Mr. Rogers meets musical theater...music, dance, poetry, and fun for the whole family (including grown ups!) Your hostess, eight-time Broadway actress (The Prom, Spongebob, Mary Poppins) Vasthy Mompoint, will take you on a musical theater adventure combining live performance with virtual production.
Every interactive show is full of song, dance, and joy as kids stay active with snippets of actual Broadway choreography taught by musical theater performers, sing along to original children's songs from the Vasthy & Friends album, learn about diverse world cultures through our Beyond Your Backyard segments, and engage with the arts & kid-friendly artists in a way like no other!
Get ready to sing, dance, and play. Vasthy says, “We promise you will leave with a smile on your face.”

Vasthy and Friends was created by and features Mompoint, a first-generation Haitian-American who grew up in Alabama, went on to be in eight Broadway shows but never saw herself represented on film, TV, or stage. Various performing guests join her on their album, adding music, dance, and even poetry to the mix. Dedicated to authentic representation across the board, Vasthy and Friends produces content that reflects the importance for all kids to see themselves reflected back with a smile.
Mompoint, host of Vasthy and Friends, states: “We are so excited to help a new generation of kiddos fall in love with the art form of music just like we did. When done right, music has the power to make everyone feel seen. It can inspire one to make change and, in a world that might seem dim, can lead to a wonderful world of empathy by simply putting oneself into another’s shoes (we hope some nice shiny glitter ones!)” |
