Santa Monica Playhouse produces upwards of twenty-five in-house productions per year. We often hold auditions for a specific show, as well as scheduling private auditions throughout the year, with an eye towards any or all of said twenty-five plays. We are not a “membership” company, although we do have two resident companies - Actors' Repertory Theatre and the Young Professionals' Company. From time to time we will post casting opportunities on our website, as listed below.
Evening Shows & Main Stage Productions
We produce mainly original work including, but not limited to: musicals, comedies of all kinds, feel-good-laugh-out loud plays, thoughtful contemporary plays, and Victorian dramas. And the occasional revival.
We hold general auditions several times a year with an eye towards our future productions. When we're casting for a specific show, we'll list it right here. Keep checking back for updates, if you'd like.
Please note all of our evening show productions work under the AEA 99-seat plan (unless otherwise noted.) Union and Non-Union submissions are accepted.
See "How to Submit" below to inquire about setting up an audition appointment. Please do not email several times - we'll be in touch if we would like to see you. Thank you.
Family Theatre
We hold general auditions several times a year with an eye towards our future Family Theatre productions. When we're casting for a specific show, we'll list it right here. Keep checking back for updates, if you'd like.
Please note: actors interested in being considered for our Family Theatre Series must consider family theatre as equal in importance to “regular” theatre. The Playhouse approaches each of its original productions with the same attitude, work ethic, rehearsal schedule, commitment, and budget, whether the show is geared towards “Kids between the ages of 2 and 102” or “Adults Only.” Many Playhouse Family Theatre productions have gone on to become Main Stage and International Touring shows.
Non-Union only. See "How to Submit" below to inquire about audition appointments.

Must have at least basic experience in dance and/or movement for the stage.
Must enjoy and be proficient at playing broad stroke, yet truthful, characters – i.e. a silly stepsister, Tweedle Dee or Tweedle Dum, a rag doll, one of Snowhite’s Companions, a charming Prince, the Beast, a tap-dancing Piggy, Snowhite, a French wolf, and so forth.
Must have a flexible schedule for rehearsals and performances (Schools’ Theatre Field Trips are weekday mornings)
Must enjoy working in ensemble
Most importantly, must consider Family Theatre as equal in importance to “regular” theatre.
Please follow guidelines under "HOW TO SUBMIT" to schedule an audition.

After the audition committee has looked at your materials, we may contact you with audition details. Please do not send multiple inquiries.

Thank you for your interest concerning play submissions here at Santa Monica Playhouse. A few things to consider:
1. We accept submissions for full-length plays with 10 or fewer actors only. 2. We received hundreds of plays each year, so it will take six months to a year before your play will even be read. 3. We usually plan our performance schedule at least two years in advance. 4. We do not accept musicals, family theatre or children's shows. 5. NO materials will be returned.
If this does not frighten you away, please send us your resume, a brief (no more than one page) summary or synopsis of the play, and no more than ten sample pages. If there is interest in reading the entire play, we will inform you within a year of your submission. If there is no interest, you will not hear from us. Do not send the full-length play.
