Santa Monica Playhouse produces upwards of twenty-five in-house productions per year. We often hold auditions for a specific show, as well as scheduling private auditions throughout the year, with an eye towards any or all of said twenty-five plays. We are not a “membership” company, although we do have two resident companies - Actors' Repertory Theatre and the Young Professionals' Company. From time to time we will post casting opportunities on our website, as listed below.
Evening Shows & Main Stage Productions
We produce mostly original work including, but not limited to, musicals, dark comedies, feel-good-laugh-out loud comedies, absurdist physical theatre, thoughtful contemporary plays, and Victorian dramas. And the occasional revival.
We hold general auditions every two months with an eye towards our future productions. When we're casting for a specific show, we'll list it right here. Keep checking back for updates, if you'd like.
Please note all of our evening show productions work under the AEA 99-seat plan (unless otherwise noted.) Union and Non-Union submissions are accepted.
now casting: LOVE IN BLOOM
The 10th anniversary production of a “Shakespearean” musical comedy by Evelyn Rudie and Chris DeCarlo. Chris DeCarlo directs. "Delightful whimsy… a bold ambitious piece of musical theatre” says the L.A. Weekly. Magic and mayhem, fops and fairies, mistaken identity, romance and humor abound in this tongue-firmly-in-cheek evening of theatre. The eight-member cast, in the renowned Actors’ Repertory Theatre commedia-carnival style, creates a host of over thirty characters, bringing to the stage all the stuff that dreams (and musicals) are made on. “As homage to Shakespeare, master of pantomime Marcel Marceau, Commedia dell’arte and conventions of classical theater in general, it soars. And by the time the lights fade to black, you will not be able to fight the feeling that all you need is love.” UCLA Daily Bruin.
Rehearsals start Sept. 1. Performances October 5 through November 24, Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 3:30pm. Working under the Equity 99-seat agreement - accepting Union & Non-Union submissions.
SEEKING: CALABASAS, THE MONSTER; FRISBE, MEDEIVAL MOTHER; SAND ELEMENTAL 20s - 30s, all ethnicities, male. To play multiple roles: Calabasas, the Monster (later Prince Calabasas); Frisbe, a Medieval Mother; Sand Elemental - but the main character is Calabasas - sweet, awkward monster who turns into a prince. Note: This is a musical, singing is required. Show requires extreme physical agility, stamina and control, and authentic, grounded “over the top” acting.

Thank you for your interest concerning play submissions here at Santa Monica Playhouse. A few things to consider:
1. We accept submissions for full-length plays with 10 or fewer actors only. 2. We received hundreds of plays each year, so it will take six months to a year before your play will even be read. 3.
