"Through the years this small island of creative sanity has enriched the lives of countless children and adults. Don't let this proud little theatre die." James Whitmore
"You have an incredible youth theatre education program, you offer amazing opportunities to new and emerging artists, you bring vital social issues to light with your productions, and you are a City of Santa Monica treasure. What more could anyone want."  Kelly Carlin

We can't believe we've done it!

Over half a century of continuous theatrical and educational services to the community
  • Santa Monica Playhouse was the first intimate theatre in Los Angeles to present full-length Jewish musicals, holding the record for the longest running Jewish Musical in L.A. theatre ("Author! Author! – an evening with Sholom Aleichem" – 5½ years in its initial run).
  • The first company to produce the works of Eugene Ionesco, who said "Magnificent! Your fidelity to my original intent is incredible!"
  • The first theatre to provide on-going workshops for youth, originated the first Young Professionals’ Company for artists ten and up, and the first company to present Main Stage professional performances for and by teens, holding the record for longest-running teen dramedy in the United States ("Dear Gabby" - 15 years in its initial run)
  • The first to diversify its offerings to include not only plays and workshops, but also world-class international mime artists, concerts, solo shows, stand-up comedy, jazz music festivals, film festivals, classic silent movie presentations, dance performances, and setting the tradition to weather the difficult times by increasing, rather than cutting back, its contributions to the community
  • The first theatre to present a FRINGE FESTIVAL in the City of Santa Monica – "The BFF" - Binge Fringe Festival of Free Theatre, presenting more than 50 events and 125 local, national and international artists
  • The only theatre company that has continually produced shows for both young audiences and adults, with not one dark weekend in its entire history.

Earmark your contribution for the Theatre Renovation Project as we turn our three spaces into state-of-the-art, low-voltage, green performance venues. Help us to lower energy consumption and costs, decrease our carbon footprint, revitalize the atmosphere and comfort of each space, and reduce our monthly electricity expenses so we can ensure our ability to increase diversity of programming and support our artists.
